Show object id in Power Marker mode

Reported by carpii | October 27th, 2010 @ 01:30 AM

In Power Marker mode, why not have an extra column showing the 'object id'
This would just show a unique ID for the file group (and would be same for all the dupes of that file).

This way you see which files in the list are similar to each other (like when Power Marker is turned off) but still have the flexibility to sort them how you want. This is important when it finds files which are similar or identical.but the filenames differ.

I split this ticket into separate ones: #113 #114 #115

    I didn't create a ticket for 4) which was:

When Power Marker is OFF, you can only select the children of a node for deletion/moving. Why not allow the user to tick the parent node, as depending on the path sometimes that is the one you want to move, rather than the child.

Because this is already possible by using the "Make Selected Reference" action.

I doubt this would be of much use. The point of the Power Marker mode is to sort dupes with no regards to their references files (thus allowing to mark all dupes from a specific folder, or stuff like that). Most of the time, it's unlikely that dupes from the same group ID will be close to each other, making this value useless.

Do you have an example situation where this would be useful?

Because this is already possible by using the "Make Selected Reference" action.

This is a nice feature, but can become a little cumbersome to use if theres lots of files (see example below)

Do you have an example situation where this would be useful?

Lets say I have a directory tree containing 500 PDF's. Some of them are sorted nicely into meaningful dirnames, and each one has a single dupe scattered around the dir tree, usually with a different name.

With Power Mode off, I can see the dupes listed with their reference files.
Sometimes it is the reference file I want to delete, and other times it is the child node.

To delete the reference I have to right click the child, make that one the reference, and then tick the new child node, which is a bit counter-intuitive I think.

At this point I decided it would be easier to turn Power Marker On, and try to sort through the list myself, so that its easier to tick the correct one from each pair of dupes.
But this became difficult since I could no longer see which file it was duped with

Thats why I suggest the object ID, I think mostly to work around the fact you cant tick the reference file.

Thanks for a great app by the way. I hope you dont think I'm being negative by creating a bunch of tickets in one go.
I just didnt see any other way to provide informal feedback

The problem is that the power marker doesn't just "flatten" the hierarchy, it removes reference files from the list.

I understand that you find the "Make Selected Reference" system awkward, but disallowing reference files to be marked at all times re-inforces, I think, the feeling that the application is never going to delete all files in the group (which would be very bad). When you allow all files to be checked (and this even if you have a security check before you delete files), it makes some users (well at least me) uneasy about proceeding with the deletion (what if I accidentally checked too many dupes?)
