Transaction IDs are used to detect existing transactions within the same account, but they could also be used to connect imported entries to existing transactions in other accounts, saving work when importing CSV files from multiple accounts with transfers between each other.

This sounds pretty useful to me!
For what its worth, I imagine some banks provide a transaction or receipt ID in a separate column, however mine provides this info within the Description in the format "Receipt 123456" (a 6-digit number that has been unique to date, and matches up between accounts in transfers, but I suspect is only guaranteed to be unique on the specific date of the transaction). This might be all too complex to make work with this feature, but figured I'd let you know how my bank does it in case it's easily workable.
