Main split's memo is never shown when printing the Account view

Reported by Virgil Dupras | March 14th, 2010 @ 10:37 AM | in v2.2.0 (closed)

From GS

When splitting a transaction, the user is given the option to explain each of the splits with a memo line next to the account.

If a report is later generated, the memo is shown for every line of the split EXCEPT the relevant account.

eg

Let's say I spend £40 in a supermarket, of which £25 is groceries and I also pick up a pair of jeans for £15. If I later look at a print out of clothing, this line will show as:

[date] [num] [description relating to ENTIRE transaction] [supermarket] 15.00 Groceries [memo] 25.00 Cash [memo] -40.00

Nowhere does it show on the clothing listing that it was for jeans - yet this is where I'm most likely to need it!

Looking at the grocery account shows:

[date] [num] [description relating to ENTIRE transaction] [supermarket] 25.00 Clothing Jeans 15.00 Cash [memo] -40.00

The best solution for this I think would be to, if the main split has a memo, add a split line to show the memo.

... Or maybe it would be better to simply display all splits.

Software I've used previously didn't have a description field. If the transaction was from one account to another (eg payment of an electricity bill), then the memo field functioned as Description does in MG, so the screen would show

    [date]..[num]..[Payee]..[amount]..[balance]
    ........................[category]
    ........................[memo]

There's no reason why the category (or account, since MG does it properly!) and memo couldn't go on the same line, other than the possibility of running out of space - which is possibly why positive and negative numbers where used in the amount column, rather than dedicated columns (although I quite LIKE dedicated columns!). So in a report the line would often look like this

    [date]..[num]..[Payee]..[category]..[memo]..[amount]..[balance]

In the event of a split, the category on the screen was replaced by the word --split-- and clicking on this would bring up the split. In a report, it would show as below - the amounts of each split line were indented.

    [date]..[num]..[Payee]..--split--...................[amount]..[balance]
    ........................[memo]...[category]..[amount]
    ........................[memo]...[category]..[amount]

I"m not asking for it to be exactly like this. Just intending to give ideas for possibilities. Hope this helps.

(Dots for alignment only - and OMG how difficult it was, working in fixed-width font, but previewing in font with proportional spacing!)

I don't know why this ticket is still "new", but this is definitely something that has to be fixed.
