Improve graph readability

Reported by Virgil Dupras | January 24th, 2010 @ 06:17 PM

While graphs give a good overall idea of progression over time, they're not very good at letting the user know about specific values. This should be improved.

There's a list of suggestions on this GS thread

    From e-mail:

I just activated some savings accounts to be shown again in the net worth graph at the bottom and found that I cannot see the monthly movement clearly enough anymore. It would be great to have an option to determine the steps on the vertical axis manually. Once you cross 10k the incremental step is 5k… which makes it difficult to analyse smaller changes. Also, I’d suggest to have the lowest point as the minimum on the vertical axis subject to the selected timeframe. Looking at the graph at the moment there’s a lot of green area covering the screen, leaving little space to the top.

    Further comments from e-mail:

Whenever I do charts at work that have a rather wide scale I use the symbol in the vertical axis to signal a gap/jump. “ǁ” at 45 degree angle. I’m sure you know what I mean.

I also was looking at a monthly output recently and couldn’t make head nor tail out of the bars at the bottom in my profit and loss tab. If these are weekly stats, then you should add the corresponding week as text to the x-axis, i.e. cw 24 (calendar week 24).

Related to this issue is that the Net Worth graph doesn't always adjust the vertical axis properly.

If the entire graph is positive, then the zero line is shifted down (off the graph) to let you see the "detail" in small variations (e.g. if the net worth ranges from 34,100 to 35,600 the vertical axis will run from 34,000 to 36,000).

But it doesn't do this when the entire graph is negative (e.g. if the net worth ranges from -34,100 to -35,600 the vertical axis runs from 0 to -36,000), so with a loan/mortgage where monthly changes are maybe 1% of the debt, its very hard to see what the graph is doing.

This is a bug, rather than a feature request. I created #257.

I have just spawned #344 from this ticket to deal with overlapping legends in pie charts.
